Rules


1. ANNOUNCEMENT
Lleida City Council, through the Regidoria de Promoció Cultural, Museus, Festes i Cultura Popular, and the Regidoria d’Educació, announces the 22nd International Piano Competition Ricard Viñes, to promote and stimulate the formation and the performances of young performers and disseminate their work and the piano music in general.
The competition is governed by the grounds previously published in the BOP No. 148 dated August 16, 2013(https://bop.diputaciolleida.cat/faces/consultaF/servlets/donarEdicte/?id=2013_148_6002).

 2. COMPETITORS
The competition is open to pianists of all nationalities born on or after January 1, 1988. This excludes 1st Prize’s winners in previous editions, and families of jurors or pianists who have been students of the jurors during the last two years.

3. ROUNDS AND REPERTORY
Candidates will be subjected to three rounds: qualifying, semifinal and final. The structure and repertoire of each of the rounds are:
– Preliminary round: a study of virtuosity, two sonatas by D. Scarlatti or A. Soler, one or more free choice pieces. The qualifying round must not last longer than 20 minutes.
Semi-final round: A complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, one work by Enric Granados (see annex 1) and optionally one or more pieces of the participant’s choice. The qualifying round must not last longer than 35 minutes.
– Final round: Free choice repertoire no longer than 45 minutes. This must include one work by Ricard Viñes repertoire(see annex 2).
All works and studies will be performed from memory in all rounds.
Contestants are not allowed to present the same piece in more than one round.
Parts of works will not be accepted in any of the rounds.
When the contestant is called to perform, he/she must deliver to the jury secretary, two        photocopies of the scores of each round.
Those who are not present in the hall when they’re called to perform will be eliminated.
The jury reserves the right to cut short or interrupt any of the tests if the contestant exceeds the maximum time for each.

4. PRIZES
The following prizes will be awarded: 1st  Prize, 2nd Prize, 3rd Prize, Special Prize for the best performance of the Ricard Viñes repertoire, Special Prize for the best performance of the Enric Granados repertoire and Special Prize for the best Spanish competitor.
The amount of the awards will be as follows:

First Prize: 6.000 € ( sponsored by IFR Group)
Second Prize: 3.000 €
Third Prize: 1.500 €
Special Prize for the best performance of the Ricard Viñes repertoire: 2.000 € 
Special Prize for the best performance of the Enric Granados repertoire: 1.000 € 
Special Prize for the best Spanish participant: 1.000 €
The amounts of the prizes are subject to the legal taxes.
The winners must perform at the awards ceremony in order to receive their prize.
Prizes are indivisible and might be not awarded.
Jury’s decisions are irrevocable.
The awards ceremony will take place the day after the final test with a performance by the winners.
The First Prize winner will be offered the chance to act with Vallès Symphony Orchestra in two concerts to be held at the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona and the Auditori Municipal Enric Granados de Lleida, on the date agreed with the Auditorium director during the 2017-2018 season.
The winners of the Second Prize and the winner of the Special Prize for best Spanish participant will be offered the possibility to act as a pianist in a concert at the Municipal Auditorium Enric Granados in Lleida. The date will be agreed with the Auditorium director.

5. DOCUMENTATION
To participate in the competition will be required to submit, within the period prescribed in clause “applications” of this announcement, the following documents:
1. Application form duly completed and signed
2. Photocopy of  the identity card or passport of the candidate
3. Curriculum vitae specifying studies, concerts offered, awards and diplomas and other aspects that the candidate sees fit.
4. Artistic photograph of the candidate
Applicants authorize the organization of the competition to perform all actions and check to verify the information they have submitted.

As of May 31st you can not alter the repertoire presented in the registration form.

6. SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
After the deadline for submission of applications, and in the case that more entries were received than the competition can support, the organization will select a maximum of forty-five candidates.
The selection will take into account strict reference to musical and pianistic areas, the following criteria: scores on the candidate’s musical studies, the importance of the prizes and diplomas obtained, concerts, recitals and other actuacions offered.
The selection is made at least by four jurors, two of which will necessarily be the director of the Municipal Auditorium Enric Granados and the Commissioner of Competition.

7. PRESENTATION OF COMPETITORS
All candidates selected according to the procedure established in the preceding clause will be required to attend the reception of competitors who will take place on June 26 at 9.30 in Concert Hall 2 in the Auditorium.
Failure to attend at the date, time and place indicated, means an automatic exclusion and the loss of all rights.

 8. DRAW
The day of the reception of competitors will be made, in public, a draw to determine the order of the performances. For this purpose will be introduced in a container, ballots for each one of the competitors, numbered according to an alphabetical list. A person outside the organization will bring one of the ballots and from the resulting number, the concursants will act consecutively.

9. PRACTICE ROOMS AND COMPETITION’S PIANO
The organization will provide to competitors practice rooms with pianos in the music conservatory during the days of the competition.
Participants may try the piano in the hall of the competition on the schedule determined by the organization.

10. APPLICATIONS
The deadline for applications is the April 21st.The organization will have until May 29th to communicate via email to all applicants their admission or non-admission to the competition. The candidates accepted will have a week, from the time the organization  informs them of their admission, to make effective payment of the registration fee of €100,00 (one hundred euros).

11. ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES
The non-fulfilment of one or any of these rules or the refusal to accept the jury’s decisions may lead to exclusion from the Contest, with no right of appeal.If there are any problems interpreting the rules, the official version in Spanish will be the only valid one.
