With the inauguration in 1995 of the “Enric Granados” Auditorium and the new installations of the City of Lleida Professional Conservatoire of Music, Lleida City Council attained a new and important objective: the city and its surrounding regions would have at its disposal a public institution for high-quality musical education and concert halls of international standard.

It is at this important moment of our cultural development when the initiative to fund a national piano competition in the name of our distinguished pianist Ricard Viñes is taken up by the Conservatoire and organized as part of the programme of the International Course for Piano Technique and Performance which has been given in Lleida since 1991.

Since its first edition, the Ricard Viñes contest has been run at a national level. In 2002, with the historical significance of the arrival of the notes and coins of the single European currency in mind and joining in with the spirit of communication and cultural exchange between peoples and towns across Europe, we open the doors of the Ricard Viñes contest to young pianists from all over the European Union. Finally, since 2007 we offer the possibility of taking part in competition to pianists of all over the world. From the Councillor for Culture’s office, we encourage them to take part in the competition and to get to know the City of Lleida, where they will be well received and where they will be able to discover for themselves a town with an identity that they will not forget.
